Adorable pink hoodie featuring a cute kitten design and floral inner lining with playful ear accents.

Here's another fun hack of the Brindle & Twig free hoodie, one of the favourite tops here at Picklefish HQ. I wanted to sew up a fun series of hoodies for the great niece and I was inspired by the HTVs I had purchased from OTY Fabric that seemed to match with the gorgeous Vintage Floral print from OTY Fabric NZ as well. So I decided it was time to do a fun addition to the hood, much like my earlier hack (the Dragon Hoodie) I added ears this time. In my tutorial I am showing the Cat Ears with the sweet kitten HTV but I am offering a FREE add-on pattern for you in sizes 2-4 years so you can add Fox or Bunny ears instead. In my example I used the Cat Ears and scraps of softshell to stiffen the inner ears and make sure they would stand up.

In my tutorial you modify the hood with a panel and insert ears between the panel seam so its quick and fast. The lining remains the same its only the outer hood you modify. I will show you steps on how to modify the hood pattern yourself or you could download and print my FREE add-on hood in sizes 2-4 years if you want to do that sizing yourself. You will also need to download my Add-On ears PDF pattern and print it out as well. I will supply a link further down for you.

I have used stretchy OTY Fabric NZ French Terry for my Hoodie and lined the hood with OTY Fabric Cotton Spandex knit as well. I used scraps of softshell as the inner ear stiffening and a scrap of Cotton Spandex for the front of the ears as well. You could use Interfacing for the ears if you like but it will make it hard to turn the ears right side out when they are quite little. Use some soft flexible fabric like Felt, Softshell, Polar Fleece etc that is bulky without being too stiff. You don't have to use this particular pattern for your hoodie. I use the Brindle & Twig FREE hoodie because its always to hand and already printed. Feel free to use whatever is your favourite hoodie pattern and just follow the steps to create the panel. Try to use a hood pattern that is just two pieces rather than one that already has a centre panel. My tutorial will only touch on parts of fully sewing the Hoodie, it assumes you already know how to sew, or have the instructions on hand on how to sew up your kids hoodie. I will only go into detail about the hood itself in this tutorial.

Feel free to check out my other tutorial if you want to make a cool Dragon Hoodie with an HTV instead. Otherwise onto the tutorial we go:

Creating your Hacked Hood Pattern Piece:

NB: if you are using the downloaded FREE Hoodie Add-on pattern you can skip these steps and continue on to cutting out your pattern pieces in the steps below.

To create your hacked hood grab your Hood pattern piece and trace it onto a new piece of paper. Measure about 5cm in from the front of the hood pattern piece and place a marker at the top of the pattern piece. Using a ruler measure down from that marker and place a marker about midway down also at 5cm from the edge. Again place a marker at the bottom of the pattern piece. Join the markers in a slight curve following the curve of the front of the hood pattern. See photo for more detail.

Cut along that line you just drew and you will have a front of the hood pattern piece and a back of the hood pattern piece. You can label them at this point if you would like to. You can at this point sellotape on a strip of paper and measure out approximately 1-1.5cm from that edge to create a seam allowance or make note that when cutting out the hood you add seam allowance to that edge when cutting.

Now lets move on to cutting out our Hoodie pattern.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Sew a Cute and Cozy Hoodie with Ears for Kids:

Fabric pieces with colorful clips on a green grid mat. Patterns include floral and pink. A box of mixed clips is in the top left.

Put your ear pieces together:

With Right sides facing and the inner stiff liner of felt or softshell sandwiched between clip your ear pieces together. You want the Outer Ear and Ear Lining pieces right side together first and then the inner stiff piece as your last layer.

Scissors and fabric pieces on a green cutting mat, alongside a clear box of colorful clips and fabric scraps, suggesting a sewing project.

Stitch around both ear pieces in 3 layers as shown and trim the ears close to the stitching.

Two fabric pieces with floral prints on a green cutting mat. Each piece has pink, yellow, and red flowers, neatly sewn with a curved shape.

Turn ears right side out and smooth flat. Topstitch around the ear close to the edge, this will provide some strengthening and stiffening of the seam and help your ears stand up better.

Pink fabric pieces on a green grid mat with a transparent ruler. One piece has a floral pattern. Tools suggest sewing project.

Two pink fabric pieces with triangular flaps on a green cutting mat. The background grid assists in precise measurement.

Place your ears to the front outer hood panel piece about 3-4 cm down from the centre hood seam as shown.

Baste in place by laying the patterned side of the ear towards the right side of the hood panel piece.

Pink fabric pieces with colorful clips are laid out on a green grid cutting mat. A small container of clips is at the top.

Place the Front Outer Hood panel pieces to the Back Outer Hood panel pieces right side to right side and clip together.

Stitch the Hood Panel seams sandwiching the basted ear pieces between the two panel pieces as shown.

Two pink fabric pieces with floral patterns are displayed on a green grid mat, with a square metal weight on the top right.

Topstitch the Panel seam folding the ear back towards the Back panel piece. Stitch the seam folded towards the front as this will allow the ears to stand up better and keep the seam from folding and causing the ears to flop.

Pink fabric piece with colorful clips on a green grid mat. A box of additional clips is nearby. Sewing project in progress.

Clip your two Outer hood pieces together at the centre seam and front seam and stitch together with an overlocker.

Pink fabric hat with floral-patterned cat ears on a green grid cutting mat. The hat appears open and unfinished.

Turn outer hood right side out.

Drawing of a cat surrounded by flowers on pink fabric. Background has gray polka dots and the word "WASH" is partially visible.

Pink sweatshirt with a cat illustration and floral design, plus matching floral pants and hood with ears, on a green cutting mat background.

Add your HTV to the front pattern piece right side using the information provided by OTY Fabric NZ (you can find the tutorial on her website)

Complete the Body of your hoodie using instructions in your pattern.

Stitch the inner hood lining together right side to right side.

Pink fabric pinned with multi-colored clips on a green cutting mat. A clear box of clips is beside the fabric.

Insert your Hood lining within the outer Hood right sides to right sides and clip the front edges together. Stitch together with your overlocker.

Pink hoodie with floral lining and ear details on a green grid mat, secured by colorful clips. Box of clips beside it.

Turn hood right side out. You can choose to topstitch the front edge of your hood using a coverstitch or small zig zag stitch on your sewing machine at this point. (you will need it to be stretchy so don't use a straight stitch when topstitching or it will break).

Clip neck edge together matching seams.

Pink baby sweater with floral lining, clipped at neckline. Set on a green grid mat, with a plastic box of colorful clips beside it.

Insert the two hoods into the body of your hoodie matching back seam of the hood to the centre back and the front seam of the hood to the centre front. Hood and hoodie body should be right side to right side. Clip and Stitch the hood and body together.

Pink hoodie with cat print surrounded by flowers. Hood with floral lining and small ear shapes. Soft mood. Gray background.

And your Earred Hoodie is done!

Have fun with the other ear options and colourways, you don't even have to make it plain or use an HTV. Use your creative skills and make it whichever way you want. This is a nice simple hack to add some personality to a basic hoodie.
